A Smarter Way to Eat Sugar
I read this interesting article today Why Sugar Makes Us Sleepy (And Protein Wakes Us Up) . It talks about Orexin which is a pair of neuropeptide hormones is responsible for the stimulation of food intake and it aslo stimulates wakefulness and energy expenditure.
These neuropeptides regulate how tired you feel, how energetic you feel to how how hungry you are. Usually people who are obese or who have chronic fatigue have low levels of orexin.
The Orexin system is the actual is the actual coupler between what the body needs and what the mind desires!
Many of us have experienced drowsyness after a big meal, a direct connection is that consuming sugar decreases the activity of the orexin system. It is also known that food high in protein has the opposite effect and causes increased metabolism and bodily activity.
It has been discovered that eating foods high in protein in conjuction with foods high in sugar can prevent the sugar from decreasing the activity of the orexin system.
The article states that
“…consuming even a little protein canceled out the curse of sugar, especially when the foods were consumed simultaneously.”
So the moral of the story is, eat protein with pastries and other desserts, the author of the article suggests almonds.
